Darkness To Mask
To turn the white portion of a scanned greyscale image (like a scanned pencil drawing) into a transparent layer in Photoshop, you can use this filter. It does not destroy the fine detail of the pencil texture.

If you want to make a layer non-transparent but without altering the red/green/blue color channels, this is for you.
