Internet Image Degradation
Do things grow old in cyberspace? The answer is "yes"...
When pictures are constantly copied from website to website, and recompressed and rescaled every time, an interesting loss of quality occurs gradually over time.
This page tries to simulate and display this gradual devolution. The first picture is the original.
First someone reduced to a 26 color gif.
Then someone resized the image to 469 pixels and compressed the image at 52% jpeg quality.
Someone resized the image to 492 pixels and compressed the image at 56% jpeg quality.
After that, they resized the image to 338 pixels and compressed the image at 22% jpeg quality.
Someone added a bit of contrast, resized the image to 313 pixels and compressed the image at 67% jpeg quality.
Someone else reduced to a 31 color gif.
Then someone reduced to a 43 color gif.
After that, they resized the image to 384 pixels and compressed the image at 29% jpeg quality.
Then they resized the image to 493 pixels and compressed the image at 34% jpeg quality.
Someone else added a bit of contrast, resized the image to 527 pixels and compressed the image at 30% jpeg quality.
Then someone resized the image to 351 pixels and compressed the image at 22% jpeg quality.
Someone added a bit of sharpen because it looked blurry, resized the image to 516 pixels, compressed the image at 19% jpeg quality and then they resized the image to 546 pixels and compressed the image at 22% jpeg quality.
Someone else reduced to a 12 color gif and after that, they resized the image to 575 pixels and compressed the image at 30% jpeg quality.
After that, they resized the image to 577 pixels and compressed the image at 15% jpeg quality and then they reduced to a 42 color gif.
Then someone resized the image to 565 pixels, compressed the image at 33% jpeg quality and someone resized the image to 492 pixels and compressed the image at 11% jpeg quality.
Then they added a bit of sharpen because it looked blurry, resized the image to 522 pixels, compressed the image at 30% jpeg quality and someone else resized the image to 510 pixels and compressed the image at 34% jpeg quality.
After that, they resized the image to 490 pixels, compressed the image at 26% jpeg quality and after that and they reduced to a 11 color gif.
Then someone added a bit of contrast, resized the image to 531 pixels, compressed the image at 34% jpeg quality and then they resized the image to 331 pixels and compressed the image at 34% jpeg quality.
Someone else resized the image to 304 pixels, compressed the image at 26% jpeg quality and someone else added a bit of sharpen because it looked blurry, resized the image to 469 pixels and compressed the image at 29% jpeg quality.
Someone resized the image to 389 pixels, compressed the image at 23% jpeg quality and then someone resized the image to 449 pixels and compressed the image at 13% jpeg quality.
