Thoughts on proposed certification

We cannot test all features of matroska, as there are simply too many for any device to fully support. Also, Matroska supports formats so obscure that we'll never see them. So here are some stray thoughts on what might be a good set of commonly used features to test for each player. To make the test fairly easy to pass, I deliberately left out stuff like chinese/japanese/thai subs, more obscure codecs etc. These could go into some sort of extended certification.

Also, each video and audio codec can be adjusted in many ways. We should decide on a reasonable amount of features to require for each codec. Any device that passes all tests should receive a "Matroska Certified" label of some kind.

To be able to pass the video test, the play must play H.264 video indicated in these ways:
  • V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC
  • V_MS/VFW/FOURCC with the "H264" fourcc (because of VirtualDubMod and similar apps.)
  • V_MS/VFW/FOURCC with the "x264" fourcc (because of VirtualDubMod and similar apps.)
